Focus
The Research Group Workflow Systems and Technology (WST) focuses on the data-driven analysis and support of organizational operations. The approaches we develop to this end are versatile and can be applied to a wide variety of domains, ranging from commercial settings, such as the production of goods or the handling of customer orders, to public administration, such as permit-request management, to treatments in healthcare settings.
WST consists of two working groups: Process-Oriented Information Systems and Business Analytics

Process-Oriented Information Systems (POIS)
The POIS group led by Univ.-Prof. Han van der Aa, Ph.D., which primarily focuses on process mining, i.e., the analysis of organizational processes based on data generated during their execution. In this context, the areas of interest of POIS group members include (but are not limited to):
- Semantics-aware process mining
- Business process simulation
- Studying process change and dynamics
- Predictive process monitoring
- Sampling and completeness analysis of event data
- Visualization of process analysis insights
- Responsible process mining
Business Analytics (BA)
The BA group led by Ass.-Prof. Dr. Bernhard Lutz focuses on the development of data-driven methods for improving decision-making in organizations and understanding human behavior in digital environments. Research areas of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Reinforcement learning for prescriptive analytics in operations, logistics, and production systems
- Natural language processing and text analytics for extracting decision-relevant insights from unstructured data
- Digital platforms and online user behavior
- Experimental research on human decision-making using physiological measurements
